When thermometers in Poland start to hit temperatures above 30 degrees, we instinctively look for an escape from the sun. However, instead of complaining about the African heat, it is worth stealing a few tricks from nations for whom 35°C is a summer daily norm. So, how can you protect yourself from the heat wisely and stylishly without giving up the charms of beautiful weather? Check out our lifestyle hacks.
1. Trade ice for mint and sage
Your first reflex on a hot day? A glass full of ice. That is a mistake that our body quickly verifies – an icy drink forces the body to produce heat to warm the liquid to body temperature. As a result, we feel even hotter a moment later.
Forget about drinking liters of ice-cold water. Drink beverages at room temperature or that are gently warm. A brilliant trick is to brew an infusion of sage or fresh mint. Sage naturally regulates thermogenesis and reduces sweating, while mint provides an immediate, subtle feeling of cooling from within.
2. Instead of cotton - linen and muslin!
What you wear on hot days determines how you feel. Thick cotton, and even more so synthetic materials, act like a thermos.
Opt for linen and muslin. These fabrics have a loose weave, which allows the skin to breathe and wicks moisture away perfectly. Furthermore, linen has natural cooling properties – it always feels slightly cooler to the touch than the ambient temperature. A loose linen shirt is the simplest and most stylish way to handle the urban jungle on a hot afternoon. Additionally, swap out your textiles in the bedroom and living room - they provide a subtle feeling of coolness while you sleep.
3. A home sanctuary – keep the heat outside your windows
To ensure your home remains a pleasant refuge, you must act in advance. The simplest rule from Southerners is: close the windows and pull down the blinds before the sun starts to hit its peak (i.e., around 9:00-10:00 AM). Leave airing out the house for the night and early morning.
4. Cooling strategic points
When you feel the temperature during the day reaching your limit, instead of taking another shower, act locally.
For a few minutes, run cold water over the inner sides of your wrists and the back of your neck. These are places where blood vessels run very close to the skin's surface. Cooling the blood in these areas brings instant relief to the whole body and provides pleasant refreshment for the head.
5. Create a shaded oasis outdoors
Surviving the heat outdoors depends on one thing: good shade. A traditional umbrella is an absolute minimum, but it is worth thinking about your outdoor zone as a luxurious living room.
The key is fabrics and materials that do not heat up in the sun. When choosing garden furniture, look for pieces with rounded, organic shapes and airy structures that allow for free air circulation. Soft, light-colored cushions resistant to UV rays will not only create a safe space for an afternoon nap, but will also make your terrace look like one from a luxury resort.
Summer in Poland can be intense, but it also has its own unique charm. You just need to slow down, drink herbal infusions, and allow yourself an afternoon moment of laziness in the shade. After all, nothing helps you survive the heat quite like peace of mind.
